Struggling with your digestion or IBS?

The best way to solve your digestion problems is to do it slowly, focussing on a few foods at a time.

Whether you’ve struggled with uncomfortable bloating, excessive or smelly wind or belching, heartburn, constipation, diarrhoea or a sudden need to go to the loo after meals on and off for years – or overnight – my supported, 12-week personalised Reset Your Digestion Programme gets to the bottom of your symptoms so that you can eat normally and enjoy life again.

– Nutrition & IBS

My Approach to IBS

Have you been following a restricted diet hoping that it would solve things or avoiding foods, but it still hasn’t made a difference? Here’s a secret: it’s not always about removing things from your diet; sometimes it’s the combination of foods you eat, including more variety into your meals or switching from one type of fruit or vegetable to another that gives you the relief you need.

We’ll make a bespoke plan for you, starting with just 2 or 3 simple things to cut out or add into your meals, so that you get relief straight away.

As a Registered Nutritionist, I’ll explore with you the food you eat and identify patterns of foods that trigger your symptoms. We’ll find out whether it’s the time of day, how often or where you are eating that’s causing your problems and identify the connection between what you are eating, doing or drinking that’s making you suffer, feel nauseous, tired or low in energy.

Virginia Hills Nutrition

You won’t have to completely overhaul your diet, clear out all your cupboards and buy a whole new raft of foods or ingredients you didn’t even know existed to beat the bloat.

If you are worried about being made to go gluten or dairy free or stay on the low FODMAP diet forever, that’s not my default. I know that some foods make your bloating worse, do smelly farts, burp more or lead to pain under your ribcage. I can spot those patterns – sometimes it might be the food you love (bread, milk, biscuits or cheese!) but often it’s something you haven’t even considered could be a problem, despite your googling and late night research.

Working out which food or drinks to avoid – and ideally not for life! – is my speciality! I aim to restore your digestive health whilst keeping as much variety and colour in your meals as possible.

the unique programme follows a step-by-step approach to your health, and typically lasts for around 90-days

step one.

Let’s Chat!

Book a 30 minute, no obligation chat with me, and I’ll listen to your concerns & explain a little more about how I can support you.

step two.

The Prep

You’ll complete an online questionnaire, and record a food, drink and lifestyle diary in preparation for our first 90-minute consultation. Don’t worry, it’s easy!

step three.

The Plan

We’ll then have our 90-minute consultation, explore the information you’ve provided a little further and work on some initial changes to your food & lifestyle to start getting you on track and so that you can start winning at life once again…

You will also receive your Personalised Health Plan, covering your specific recommendations (no need to take notes!), supplement & functional test recommendations (if that’s what you choose) via my secure, online portal.

Approximately 2 weeks later, we meet again for a 15-minute chat to see how you’re getting on and whether you have any quick questions you need help with.

step four.

The Follow-Up

After 4-weeks on your Personal Health Plan, we’ll meet again for a 60-minute consultation to see how you’re getting on, the improvements you have noted, and what we still need to work on.
We’ll agree some further food & lifestyle changes at your pace and discuss any change in or new symptoms you’ve encountered. We’ll also review any functional test results (if appropriate) or supplements I’ve suggested – and you’ll receive another Personalised Health Plan afterwards.

We then work on a 2 – 3 week check-in & follow-up cycle with a third, Personalised Health Plan after your next follow-up to complete your programme.

If you are not feeling 100% tip-top by the end of your programme, we can repeat this process until you are: the number of times we meet varies from person to person and on how quickly your body responds to the lifestyle changes implemented. This is completely flexible, and you are under no obligation to keep going once you feel better, but can always book another 60-minute consultation if you need it.

You ask, I answer

if your question is not listed, just get in touch

Should I change my diet before I come to you?
No – please don’t make any changes! It’s best if you keep your diet as normal as possible before your first consultation. The quickest way for me to solve how you are feeling is for me to see exactly what you are eating and drinking and how you are feeling at your first consultation. I won’t judge you on what you eat: my sole focus is working out what’s causing you to feel the way you do and solving it once and for all.
Will I need to take any tests - blood, stool or food intolerance tests?
This very much depends on your symptoms and your situation. Sometimes I do recommend functional testing – mostly stool testing which you can take at home – however, only where I believe this will be of benefit to you. With a functional test result, my approach can be much more targeted and specific, leading to faster and more personalised results for you. Functional testing may be recommended to assess nutritional imbalances and inform your personalised diet and lifestyle recommendations to support your wellbeing. All functional test recommendations are personalised to you and are at an additional cost, if you wish to go down this route.
Will I need to take supplements?
This very much depends on your symptoms and your situation. Sometimes I do recommend supplements, but only those which I believe will benefit you and help you reach your goal in a more targeted and quicker way and, most importantly, only if you wish to do so. I always try to keep supplement recommendations to a minimum and within your budget range, recommending good quality supplements from a recommended, online supplier. You will receive a 10% discount on any personalised supplements I recommend.
Do you work with clients with SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth)?
Yes.
Can I work with you if I have IBS?
Yes. Many of my clients have received an IBS diagnosis from their GP, but not all. If I believe you need to see a GP for this or any other diagnosis, I will ask you to book an appointment with your GP in between our consultations and work alongside any of their recommendations.
Do you work with men?
Yes.
Could I be constipated?
It’s important to be going to the loo and doing a poo regularly, ideally every day – if you don’t do a poo every day, you will start to feel bloated, tired, lethargic and sluggish. Even though you might not think it, you are likely constipated. Book in a chat with me and we can discuss how I can help!
Do you suspect you have a food intolerance and avoiding certain foods as a result?
Not sure how to work around an intolerance or how to solve it? That’s my speciality! Book in a chat with me and we can discuss how I can help!
How do I pay for my programme of consultations?
You will receive an invoice with payment details through my secure portal in advance of the consultation, and payment will need to be made by bank transfer at least 48 hours before the consultation by bank payment. If you require a payment plan to spread the cost, feel free to ask and this can be arranged.
Will I have to cut out gluten, bread, pasta or cheese forever?
Whilst gluten and dairy are unhelpful for some people, you don’t always need to cut out gluten or dairy and, if you do, it’s not always forever. Sometimes it’s the amount of these foods or ingredients that you are eating that can be causing the problem – and it’s my job to help you navigate those.
What's the advantage of taking a functional stool test?
Sometimes there could be digestive health markers or an imbalance in your gut microbiome (generally referred to as dysbiosis) that can be contributing to your symptoms, where food changes alone may be insufficient. For example, an increase in some gut bacteria can cause smelly wind, bloating, make you burp more, cause long term constipation, diarrhoea or make you rush to the loo quickly after meals.
If I suspect this and recommend a functional stool test, my approach can be much more targeted and specific, which leads to faster results for you.
Can you test my gut bacteria (the gut microbiome)?
Yes! This can sometimes play a significant part in your bloating, constipation or IBS symptoms. You can order a private, functional stool test through me that you can take at home.
I’ve been told I need to go on the low FODMAP diet, but don’t know how or why. Can you help?
Yes
Do you work with children?
Yes. I generally work with children once they have reached around 7 or 8 years old, provided you feel that your child is able to communicate their symptoms with me and/or how they are feeling. I will work very slowly with your child and would ask you to present in the consultation. Your child does not always need to be present for each consultation: however, I would like to see them for at least part of the first consultation.
Do I need to have a diagnosis of IBS before working with you?
No. However, if I feel that a diagnosis of IBS will benefit you or if I am concerned about any of your symptoms, I will refer you to and work alongside your GP. We can continue working together in the meantime.
Is it possible that some foods can make me burp more, give me more wind or make the wind/burps more smelly?
Yes – absolutely! Book in a chat with me and we can discuss how I can help!
Do I need to come and see you in person?
No. All of my consultations are run online, using zoom. You can be sitting in the comfort of your own home or office when working with me. However, I will ask you to have your video turned on during our consultations, as this helps me to get to know you better (and I will always have my video on too!).

Struggling with digestive issues?

what my clients say

Seeing Virginia was the BEST decision! She recommended testing & combined with her excellent knowledge, Virginia was able to explain why my symptoms were happening: after following her targeted advice, I have had no further problems & am so grateful. I thought my previous diet was quite healthy & wasn’t sure any changes would make such a significant difference – I cannot recommend Virginia more highly.

Claire, 49

Client

Virginia is very knowledgeable and lovely: she is easy to talk to and provides lots of advice in her sessions.

Lesley, 69, Ashford, Kent

Client

Virginia was able to pull out the key points from what I was saying and understand what my issues and concerns were in a concise manner. She then gave me advice and suggested changes that have made immediate improvements to my health and wellbeing. I am so utterly grateful and feel thoroughly relieved to have a real plan.

Caroline, 42

Client

Virginia is amazingly understanding, supportive, helpful & incredibly knowledgeable about all things related to diet, nutrition & digestion! She is extremely caring & offers very helpful advice in a way that is down to earth, sensitive, sensible & not too unrealistic either.

I would highly recommend her to anyone I know, as well as others I don’t.

Emily, 37, Netherlands

You can literally say anything to Virginia – she doesn’t judge, goes at your pace, is a lot of fun and soooo knowledgeable.

Karen, 53, Kent

Working with Virginia is very comfortable and relaxed. She certainly knows her subject and explains very clearly why the body reacts the way it does. Virginia is very friendly, chatty and open. I felt at ease discussing the very personal aspects of my dietary effects.

Ann, 76, Ashford

Quick one, just to say Happy Christmas. I am approaching it feeling better than I have for years. No blips since we were last in contact. I’ll be in touch again in January. Thanks for everything.
